Historic
School Tennis Performance
History
was made at the Hay Tennis courts during the week when the Hay High School boys
team beat the Albury High School team to win the Riverina section, to now
play the state finals.
Never
before had Hay advanced beyond the Riverina semi finals in either boys or
girls teams yet last week both Hay teams won their semi finals.
Hay
for the first time hosted the semis and finals, having earlier this year beaten
Finley in both boys and girls Western Zone finals, with the Western Zones turn
to host this years Riverina carnival.
The
Hay girls team of Sophie Curtis , Ruby Cattanach, Katie Howard and Indyanna
Wilson who came into the team after a layout through injury replacing Tilly
Weeks who was unavailable, had a gutsy win over their more fancied opponents
from the Wagga Wagga High School in their semi final clash. The well
drilled Albury girls had a convincing win over Griffith in their semi and
ultimately were too strong for the Hay girls in the final.
The
Hay boys team of Jensen and Kenny Hargreaves, Brad Callaghan and Alex Haidy had
a good solid win over Kooringal High School in their semi before winning
a tough 5 sets to 2 victory over Albury to take the title.
Congratulations
to Lou Gardam on her running the successful days matches and creating a nice
atmosphere. A big thank you goes to the night competition Monday and Wednesday
players who played competition matches against the students these past few
weeks giving them strong practice and tips which in turn gave them confidence
and perhaps a good reason for their success.
All
the above take out this weeks AgFlite, Foodworks, Lani Houston Consultant and
Crightons Rural awards
Meanwhile
Monday and Wednesday night competitions as well as Sunday juniors tennis
continues with the full details on the web.

New

The
Monday night saw a big upset when the defending champions Hay Public
School lost to Les’s Small Business team of Stephen Sharp and Sarah
Lugsdin 6/3 4/6 with the winners getting the Foodworks weekly award. The
Murphy’s Clothing Store team of Kate Murphy and Jan Zambon gave the Hay
services and Fitness Centre of Katie Howard and Ruby Cattanach a good practice
match for their upcoming school tennis match the score being 6/1 6/4 These four
players win the AgFlite and Crighton’s Rural weekly awards. Other Monday night
wins went to IGA, HWMHS, Slats Fireworks and Hay Newsagency.
Three
Mad Max Production team pairs joined the regular Hay entries to make it an
entertaining first round doubles and singles night in the Wednesday competition
with Jensen Hargreaves and Brad Callaghan getting some some good practice
for their forthcoming High School clash. Alex Haidy had a good single’s win
over Tim Walsh. Good wins went to Wyvern, Auscott, Elders and Hay Shire
The
Lani Houston Consulting awards at Sunday Morning tennis went to Rachel Taylor
and Ollie Meads with a good number participating.

Late
Autumn Tennis Program Commences
The
Hay tennis Club commenced their late Autumn night competitions and Junior
Sunday Morning Tennis activities this week to finish before the
winter season when a break will be taken. Day tennis court hire hitting
has been very popular lately with all bookings essential.
Perfect
weather saw the start of a six week block for Sunday morning junior activities
in two sessions.
The
first session with 10 keen participants from Kindergarten to School Year 3
enjoyed some fun activities and hitting under Stuarts guidance got their money
worth after their 45 mins non- stop action. The second session being assisted
by Warren and Amanda had a good workout in their 75 mins duration.
The
Riverina Public Schools Tennis knockout competition for 2022 received 14
entries with Hay and Balranald Schools receiving byes to move into the quarter
finals. This week these schools met in Balranald with Hay having a strong win
to now advance to the semi-finals. Congratulations to Skye Cannon despite
having had good coaching lessons was playing her first competitive tennis with
success. Well done also to Max Hutchings and Alex Giddins as well as Hannah
Jamieson. Hannah playing top tennis has been selected in the Riverina
team to play this week at the famous Rockdale tennis centre home to the

Record
Tennis membership
The
Hay Tennis Club this financial year has recorded its biggest membership ever
with a total 344 names. It has surpassed the previous highest of 343 in
the 2014/15 year as well as the 2099/100 figure which also recorded over the
300 mark.
The
recent March memberships of 16 new players from various groups of the Mad Max
production teams bolstered the figure. It was cheaper for these people to join
the Club on a half year membership at this time of the year for their
limited time in Hay and as members being offered free hitting on the back three
courts rather than pay court hire each time they were hitting. The free
hitting on the back courts for members has proved popular. And all
hitting is being monitored.
Names
are now being taken for the next Monday and Wednesday night competitions to
commence from 2nd May to run for 5 weeks. Six finals from the summer
Monday competition will also be played on the 2nd May. The full
details are on the Clubs Website.
Currently
this week there is a junior tennis camp being held.

Slats Fireworks
take Men’s Tennis
The Summer
Wednesday night combined A and B grade men’s competition was completed last
week .
The high standard
final went down to the wire with a tie breaker decider required after sets were
one set apiece. The winning team was the Slats Fireworks team comprising Shane
McGufficke and Peter Head who was substituting for Anthony Slattery .The team
won 3/6 6/2 and 7/5 tiebreaker against the Japp’s Pharmacy team of Mick Tippet
and Geoff Chapman
Scott Dixon just
edged out Alex Haidy to take the singles title.
Meanwhile the last round
of the Monday combined women’s, Men’s and Mixed competition was played with the
finalists now determined following those results. The six finals in
various grades will be played on Mon 2nd May in conjunction with the
start of a new competition to finish 30th May.
The best of
last weeks matches were the 6/4 4/6 draws . The A grade Elders team of
Peter Davies and Paula Comb was a top match against the Bishops Lodge Motor Inn
team of Sue Hanna and Peter Head. The other draw in B grade saw Murphy’s Clothing
Maddie Lugsdin and Ellie Jamieson against the HWMHS team of Georgie Bowden and
Andrew Crawford.
The full details
are available on the Clubs website for both Monday and Wednesday nights.

Tennis
Break for Easter after busy Term1
The
last round of the Monday and Wednesday night competitions is scheduled this
week . Mondays finals in 6 grades will be held after the school holidays
in conjunction with the start of a Five week new competition.
The
closest match in the top grade in Mondays competition was the 6/2 2/6 draw
between the HPS former champions Bronny Hicks and Ellie Jamieson against the
promising Hay Services and Fitness team of Katie Howard and Brad Callaghan .
Two other very close matches were conducted in the B Res and C grade
division where the IGA team of Delesa and Kobe Payne had a battle 5/6 6/4 win
over Lucinda and Ned Williamsons Slats Painters team. Also the newcomers
Centrespot Flowers team of Lucy Shea and Lane Griffiths had a win over Hay
Motors led by the master Warren Hunt partnering young Daniel Green 6/4 4/5 .
The Pynors Accountants team of Kim Curtis and Ben Walker continue to lead the B

In team doubles play the Slats Painters team of Shayne Mc Gufficke and
Anthony Slattery narrowly lead the group following their 6/3 6/3
against the Murphys Clothing team of Liam Whitbourne and Tim Zambon.

Hay’s success in
Zone Tennis competition.
Hay War Memorial
High School hosted the zone tennis competition on Tuesday 15th of
March at the Hay Tennis Club courts.
Hay’s girls’ team
of Sophie Curtis, Ruby Cattanach, Tilly Weeks and Katie Howard played a massive
ten sets against Finley High School girls and won nine of those sets very
convincingly. The consistently strong play from all our girls through both
their singles and doubles matches was wonderful to see. Congratulations to
Sophie, Ruby, Tilly and Katie on becoming Zone winners.
Hay entered a very
strong boys’ team of Jensen Hargreaves, Brad Callaghan, Alex Haidy and Kenny
Hargreaves. The Hay boys were easy victors against Barham High school in the
first round, winning in eight straight sets and only conceding three games in
the match. This put our boys into the
final against Finley and the standard of tennis was excellent. Again our team
won in eight straight sets, or 48 games to Finley’s 7 games. Barham defeated
Deniliquin in the boys’ consolation match. The zone champions, Jensen, Brad, Alex
and Kenny, will now go through, with our zone champion girls to the Riverina
competition.
The school is very
grateful to Tony Callaghan and the Hay Tennis Club for their help and support
in running team trials, organising the play during the competition and for the
excellent facilities which we are able to use. Their provision of a barbecue
lunch for all players was also really appreciated. Teams travelling from
Barham, Deniliquin and Finley also expressed their appreciation of the facilities and competition.
ML Gardam,
Team manager.

Lack of Court
Lighting Hinders Night Tennis
Organisers of the
Hay Tennis Club Competitions are unable to accept any further late
entries to its Monday night Tennis Competition due to lack of court
Lighting.
The Club last
year installed a new synthetic grass court bringing this type
of surface to total eight courts making it ideal to run
daytime tournaments or Gala days – perfect for Hay to host last week’s
High School Western Zone Tournament Day, previously held in Barham and
Deniliquin for a good number of years.
However the
installation of this new synthetic court has come at a cost – the court
construction contractor removing the two light towers due to the modern
occupational , health and safety laws. Court nos. 5 and
4 now have no lighting or limited lighting.
Half the lights on
the back three courts were urgently recently replaced by LED lights at Club
cost, as two globes had blown making this area rather bleak and difficult to
sight tennis balls properly, but now looking good. In effect the Club has now
six lit courts.
The new format for
the Monday night which has replaced a women’s only night, now including men’s
and mixed pairings as well as women’s pairs together including a good number of
juniors playing in six grades/ categories making a nice popular atmosphere .
Entries were stopped after 34 teams were accepted with at least 4 teams
receiving weekly byes at present enabling to squeeze all matches with
staggered start times from 6pm ( still uncomfortable hot
temperatures at this time) up to last matches starting at 8.15 pm. These
times suit the majority of players needs. And of course matches are time
limited.
Currently the
Wednesday night A and B grade men’s doubles as well a singles competition
with its number of participants together with evening coaching is sufficient
with the six lit courts, although daylight saving ending may make it
difficult.
Last week’s nights
play in both Monday and Wednesday witnessed some exciting rallies over all
grades. Pointscores are now updated on the web.
Mar 14
Big Tennis Entry
The Monday Night Social
Competition being played in 5 grades has so far attracted a good entry of 35
teams. The first round had only nine contested matches with all other
teams receiving a bye.
Four matches across
the grades were split at one set apiece.
In A grade the
former champions HPS team of Elie Jamieson and Bronwyn Hicks have teamed up
again and had a 6/2 2/6 draw against the improved Hills Corner Store team of
Matt Christensen and Sarah Lugsdin. There was also a good standard
match draw 6/3 3/6 in the B Res grade when the consistent Riverine
Grazier team of Margie McClelland and Tertia Butcher played the Slats Fireworks
team of Lucinda and Ned Williamson. A number of new players made a fine
start Other winning teams were
Foodworks, Meggs Transport, Wooloondool, Crightons Engineering , Elders, Bidgee
Bobcat and Demo and Bishops Lodge Motor Inn. Full competition details are
displayed on the Clubs Website.
The Wednesday night
competition with eleven teams participating produced a very social and
enjoyable atmosphere. Despite the majority of matches not starting on
time all finished just inside the time deadline of 80 mins maximum play from
the scheduled start time. The centre court produced a marvellous 6/5 5/6 draw
with new player Mick Tippet going from strength to strength. Other new players
making good debuts were Liam Whitbourne, Tim Zambon ,Richard Cannon and Tom
Schiller. Alex Haidy had a strong singles win.
Other team winners
were Walgrove, Murphys Clothing and Slats Fireworks.

participating in the two sessions.

Sunday. Good performances in the first session went to Grant Dwyer and
Beau Garner and with a big number participating in the second session splitting
into three groups maximum points as well as coaches awards went to
Alex Giddins, Lana Rose Jessop, Ewan Kerr, Charli Giddins, Maggie Shields and
Uzair Shazad (Note for Grazier—photos to follow)
Congratulations
to the Hay War Memorial High School in securing Hay to host this
years annual Western Riverina Tennis carnival between the six
schools boys and girls teams, having been hosted at Barham on their
grass courts for many years. Hay did host this carnival once many years ago on
one of Hays hottest days.
Our
Lani Houston Consultant award this week goes to Hannah Jamieson who was
selected in the Riverina girls tennis team to play the states best later on in
Sydney. Hannah was also runner up in her girls age group in the Deniliquin
Juniors tourney played recently. Our AgFlite, Crightons and Foodworks awards
go to Sam and Prince Patel, Giselle Gill and Emma Curtis who recently travelled
to Tamworth to represent the Wilcania Forbes Diocesan team and performed well

Sunday 6th March as per the full details on the web. Anyone

Juniors
Probably
for the first time the Hay High School did not supply a boys team to contest
the prestigious Stan Jones Trophy( boys high school tennis competition) an
event old timers say they think has been running for 60 years or longer.
A
number of Hay players were either injured or participating in other
sports or unavailable or like previous years unaware the event was on.
Disappointing to the Barham club and School organisers in their effort and time
in getting the magnificent grass courts prepared. And a huge
disappointment to the Hay Tennis Club who provides a good workable court hire
system and cost for use of its facilities for school sport and offers
assistance and coaching for the High School teams.
The
High School girls however did play at Barham for the Floris Conway Cup –
however were eliminated in their first match against a brilliant Finley High
School . Larissa Sorenson at number 3 had a tough loss to well
known Mia Cameron who has competed in Hay tourneys. Hays Riverina rep
Sophie Curtis in the number one spot lost her singles and so too Indyanna
Wilson losing in the number 2 spot. Sila Vula at number 4 narrowly lost
6/5 in her singles a great effort – really hard with limited grass court
experience with two never playing on grass. The girls also lost their doubles.
At
local junior tennis on Sunday a total of 26 players participated in the two-
time groups . There will be now no tennis for the next two weeks with
players asked to follow the web timetable.
Weekly
Award
The
AgFlite and Foodworks awards go to Sophie Curtis, Indyanna Wilson Larissa
Sorenson and Sila Vula for their play at Barham
The
Crightons awards go to Max Hutchings, Rachel Taylor and Rhyla Bunyan with their
efforts at Sunday tennis
March 22
Tennis
Competitions to finals
This
week will see the last round of play in the night competitions. The
following week the finals will be held before the Easter break.
Monday
finals will be A grade and B grade and due to the situation of 13 teams
competing in the other grade it could be that three finals will be
contested in this group.
Wednesdays
play with 11 teams as well as singles being held will contest two teams finals.
Last weeks play on this night produced some high standard matches across the
complex. The improvement in the new players was noticeable. The match of the
night was the Wyvern team of Scott and Jack winning 6/3 4/5 against the Lani
Houston Consulting team of Lani and Immy Molloy. Earlier Scotty Dixon had a
good 4/2 4/2 win against Alex Haidy and Lani had a 4/2 3/4 win against
Geoff Chapman. Other results were The Convent beat AgFlite 6/3 5/6 , Crightons
Rural beat Slats boys 6/4 6/4 , Slats Fireworks beat Bunyans Plumbing 6/2 6/4
and Bluebush Merino beat Bishops Lodge 6/4 6/3. The points ladders are
displayed on the website.
The
Griffith Club are keen to hold a tennis day on Sunday 27th June if
any Hay players are interested to contact tony.
Juniors
Sundays
match in Deniliquin with a team of 16 Hay players competing was cancelled
due to the weather. Deniliquin will hold its annual Easter tourney which
includes juniors events .
It
will also conduct special juniors tournaments on 17th and 18th
April . There are only a handful of junior tourneys scheduled this year with
Hay likely to play more team matches.
Sundays
local activities will be held this weekend 5 yrs ( school ) to 7yrs- 9.30 am to
10.15 am ,and 10.15 to 11.30am for 8yrs to High School students
It
is that time of the year again for the schools knockout competition with no
play last year due to Covid. Good luck to the High Schools boys and
girls teams who travel to Barham this week to play their annual western
riverina cluster matches.
March 15
Summer
Tennis Competitions nearing completion
Night
tennis competitions are well past the halfway mark and continue to produce
close results.
Slats
Fireworks still are on top of the ladder in the Wednesday Night mens and
mixed competition following its good win with an interesting result 6/0 3/6
against Scott Dixons Wyvern team. Earlier Scott had a win over undefeated
singles leader Immy Molloy. Alex Haidy also had a good singles win. Well done
to the new players for the night in Chris McClelland, Dan Jamieson Marcus
Dhu and George from Wyvern.
In
the Monday night womens and mixed competition two very close matches with near
identical scores were won by Ellie Jamieson and Bronny Hicks for the HPS 5/6
6/4 against the Woodpark Poll team of Caz Barnett and Julie Lawrence as well as
the other A grade match with the HWMHS team of Jan Zambon and Lou Gardam 6/4
5/6 against the Hay Services and Fitness team. A 6/1 1/6 draw resulted in
B grade between Hay Newsagency and Auscott.
The
Griffith Club are keen to hold a tennis day on Sunday 27th june if
any Hay players are interested.
Juniors
There
will be no Sunday Morning junior activities this weekend Sunday 14th
as a junior Hay contingent of 20 players will travel to play green ball
sets against Deniliquin and Griffith teams to be held in Deniliquin.
Last
Sunday there was a good roll up and thanks to the experience of Warren
Hunt running and participating in a three quarters court orange ball
competition. Well done to this group a number playing this type of tennis for
the first time – these players being Noah Witherby, Mason Pearce, Sam Partel,
Ryan Clark, Ashton Green and Archie Auldist.
Many
thanks to Immy Molloy for all her coaching and we wish her all the best
returning to University. Immy will continue to coach in holiday periods.

high schoolers at 10.15am.
Night
competition teams numbers for both Monday and Wed competitions continue to
increase so players need to check the updated draw on the web.
The
A grade women’s on Monday night is so close on the points table that any one of

Wooloondool team of Jacqui and Hilton Hargreaves remain unbeaten following
their 6/1 5/6 win against the Hay Newsagency team of Kirsten and Max Hutchings.
In B Res /C grade the Les,s Small Engines team of Charli Giddins and Tania Stephenson
